theres no special method, you just draw what you want in grayscale and use tha Nvidia normalmap plugin.

basically, you start with a 50% gray background, white is bump and black depression, if you wanna it smoother -> gaussian blur, shaper -> sharpen and the overall height you adjust via contrast or into the plugin.

for the holes you paint in black over the alpha channel in the difuse texture.

I have 6 finished and 3 or 4 to go, I'll give a break on the m60 to finish them, then I send it to you.

alright, for now I'll be using the edited tex from the game.

Update,

added ammo box and belt
added lots of bolts and other stuff on the normalmap.
tweaked color saturation/variation
changed some misconceptions on the model( topcover and handles)

The barrels looks like concrete, you should use some levels on it.

The barrel's texture is way too grungy. Maybe if you turn down the contrast on that layer it could work very well.

good work on the other base materials. Overall I am very impressed with the effort you have put into painting your height map - that is the dedication that ensures PR quality work.

I think the barrel looks good, showing off the years of use and the rudeness of it. Some guns in games look too brand new and shiny and polished, i don't think a standard brazilian army gun with 30/40 years of use will look so perfect.

Brazilian Army uses the FN MAG GPMG, not the M60. The M60 is used by FARC

Agreed, it doenst look like painted metal, I'm still getting some practice on the textures.
I just don't wanna make that pitch black flat textures where you can't see the model's details

It isn't a great effort at all, is much easier and faster than modeling and baking the highpoly.
I was excited when I found that GPUmeshmapper, from AMD, that uses GPU instead of CPU, It do the job 10 time faster, but you still have to redo the baking thousands of times until you get a "clean bake".

Paladin, M60 is for FARC and other factions maybe, Brazil will be using the FN MAG, which probably will be the next model I will get involved with.

If you look at the barrel texture painted on the negev it's rather plain, with only painted highlights and stuff from the AO.

The barrel looks a bit cartoony and straight out of the modeling program with just a black coat IMO. And the scratch texture is still a bit over the top.
