Need help overclocking my new Rig!

Post by Fatal-M »

Hello there fella's ,

I bought a new AMD Rig about 2 weeks ago , ive been using laptops for a few years now and i was finally able to buy a new desktop! i have alot of experience when it comes to computers but im almost clueless about overclocking due to the fact that i havnt owned an actual desktop for a few years!

These are my specs :

Mobo : M4A79XTD EVO
Ram : G.Skill RipJaws 4GB SDRAM DDR3 1600Mhz
CPU : AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.2Ghz (Deneb Editiion)
GPU : Sapphire Radeon HD5770 (DX11)
PSU : Crosair 750W

Now i wanna speed my Ram Timings , they are currently at 9-9-9-24 and tRC is 40 . i tried doing 8-8-8-24 but the system crashed upon boot up . Im not feeling the 1600Mhz performance so what do you guys think ?

as for CPU . its currently at 3.2 but i wanna overclock it to maybe 3.4 or 3.5 but 3.2 is good for now but any help on this will be appreciated!

anyhow give out any information possible that could help me achieve a good performance please! :)

Thanks

You should be getting awesome performance with what you have. I have the 965. I always OC my AMD CPUs only 200MHz on air. That's just the most I can get from them.

What cooler you using?

Thanks for replying back ..
To answer your question , im using the stock coolers on my system but i have the XCLIO Windtunnel Fully Black Finish with 2 250mm fans on the side so that keeps it cool enough!

if you can put in some help and what i need to do to OC my system i'd really appreciate it!

Overclocking's somewhat a complicated process to explain, have you looked through any tutorials?

Download the AMD Overdrive Utility (AOD)
Drivers & Support | GAME.AMD.COM
One of the best utilities ever made imo

or use the Asus EVO program.

Depending on the cpu revision C2 or C3 (check cpuz) the 955be will do 3.5-3.6 at the default
voltage (for C2) and around 200mhz more for the C3 (revision)

The RAM is a bit more difficult to OC,because current AMD cpus have a "dual"
(DDR2/DDR3) integrated memory controller which limits the maximum frequencies.

A good way to approach this is to use tighter timings rather then higher frequencies:
For example DDR3 1333 at 7-7-7-24 cas1 over DDR1600 9-9-9-33.

oc 1 12 hour stable on prime95
i backed a bit
oc2 prime95 stable 24 hours
im working now to get tighter timings, im trying to get 7/7/7/16 but i might have to back the freqenzie to 533 thats 1600 mhz for ddr3 to get it stable 24 hours on prime95, i tried to get it stable on 800 mhz thats x3 for ddr3 around 2044 mhz but i dint like the fact i have to higher the NB and dram voltages, my NB gets to 72C on stock cooler and my ram that is supposed to be LV had to run 1.75 v.
