Burning Sands, How to take the Airfield (UK)

Post by mattnett1 »

Burning sands is one of the most difficult maps of all time in PR history. Open Desert, Random City, and then Random Airport. I can't seem to realize that I am 'undefeated' in that map. How? I am commander and cheif, I use these simple tactics. And we WIN.

Image

The White Line is the APC or Armour squad, this is needed in taking the airport.
The Green line is Just a basic squad
The Pink line is a basic squad
The Blue line is another basic squad
The BLACK line is a basic squad...
The Squad is a basic squad.

The Black and Yellow squad MUST join up, they will seize the 'Plane Area' of the Field.
The Green And Pink squad And the Blue squad join up to take the main building.
The White squad, they just protect and supress the 5 other squads.

The 3 other squads could be CAS or what ever.

The Black and Yellow squads NEED to take the right side of the main building. IF completed the Green and Pink and Blue squad's will be faster and capture the field faster.
The APC could enter the Airfield, I would recommend that AFTER the Squads enter the Field. It will take less fire.

Now... this is where mortars come in. Since the troops from the MEC will maybe land in choppers there and that... the UK needs to have Mortars, AT, or AA.
They should not fire the mortars directly at the friendlies, doing so will cause so many TK's my mom will die from it. I would say fire then when the friendlies are in the building.

Helicopters... this is a HUGE part. You need to do a 'light up' for the squads, just go there before the squads attack and just blow them up with the Gunner's Gun.

I tried this about 20 times, it worked fine. The only problem, Squad Leader co-operation.

Some SL's are just dumb retards that are not orientated with Teamwork. In my honest opinion they should be kicked. If you are in a huge clan match... Example.

I think 508th is a HUGE clan in PR. They would be more then perfect. I know they all co-operate and that good stuff. I can't see them failing. But still that is the only problem.

And tips for this to be good...

1.Make sure everyone has a mic.
2.Try to have mumble, it helps, believe me.
3.Have experienced players. 1 day old players will not be good, unless has number 1, 2.
4.Have a very good APC driver, this will be great on those poor Infantry Hostiles. They will die to get killed.
5.Have FOB's pretty close.
6.Have mortars pretty far away, this will be a 'sneak attack'.

Just try this. This will work.

**You must have every other OBJ captured for this to work**

The "Smiley Face"
The one Eye on top is the 2nd Main Building
The one eye on the Bottom is the 1st main building
And the SMILE is teh Offence/Defence line.

Nice

I find its all about the Terminal, once inside you have got an excellent firing platform or hardended position, you can move along a large length of the airfield unseen and you have a rooftop suitable for emplaced weapons.

Getting in is the hard part ofc.

there are only 2 viable ways to assault the airfield if it is defended imo

1) From the west, using teh oil cisterns for cover, a low flying helicopter can get in there if armour has secured teh south flank (so enemy tanks cannot fire upon it as it comes in, and the oil cisterns block the other views)

2) From the north east, through a large hole in the fence, there is a small trench and wooden building nearby that infantry can draw fire from

Both of these need serious mortar fire before anything really happens, all likely TOW locations need to be bombarded, and smoke needs to be put on the Airtower, Terminal and airport bunker during the assault, this won't protect you from vehicles, but it means only TOWs are your main fear from teh buildings, and fortunately you've already mortared them (and hopefully continued to mortar them) CAS doing rocket runs is also a great idea, though let the mortars have a go first - they'll probably kill an AA, the terminal roof is very vulnerable to attacks from teh north, but peel off fast or you'll stray towards MEC main where you have no intel.

The airport requires a huge combined arms effort to take successfully against a determined foe, often the best strategy is to actually sit back and draw the enemy out; fewer defenders against a fast airbourne attack.

other good suggestions

1) just shoot at the buildings with vehicles if you see something or not, chances are there is something there.
2) Armour secure the route, but stay outside until infantry have captured a building or two, in the confined space you will probably die
3) Once infantry are in hard postures, get the vehicles inside, control your fields of fire using the buildings for cover, do not get in a position where you can see everything - because everything can see YOU

Just gonna take this oppotunity to say that AASv4 for Burning Sands has been redone from teh ground up, the map now centers around teh city alot more, duplicate flags have been set up in the best points of interest and therefore should ensure variety while keeping most rounds around the most fun areas.
Also for next version, burning Sands got some nice optimisations, with a little bit of extension of the city as well as some terrain changes to make the map feel a bit less open without removing the 'desert' feel. I hope you'll enjoy it when I show it off with my other current projects in a highlight soon.

Thanks Rudd! But I agree with you.

And I would also add this. Have the Infantry move in First. So no tanks get destroyed by mines.

Only one big problem with the whole plan if all mentioned needs are met:

The MEC can just swing into the UK as they cross the desert. Made worse if there are MEC assets in the tower like sniper, AT, or similar. Made worse even more so if MEC use Russian-style motor rifle bits by using BTRs and BMPs to quickly bring troops in on their rear.

This is all forgetting the possibility of the MEC coming in through West side of town and right behind the UK infantry.

Still, not bad against an unskilled or un-coordinated team. If you can coordinate it, you're probably golden. It's all a matter of if the MEC can counter it right.

Also, helps if you can get a recon squad to scout the airfield from city and, if possible, get a closer look on foot to check what the MEC are doing (there's always SOMETHING in airfield, at all times)
A pilot, a parachutist, and a tanker. And maybe a bit of a human shield.
